South Brevard Sharing Center Brochure
Purpose:
South Brevard Sharing Center (SBSC) is about treating people with dignity and respect by providing a haven for those who struggle to meet their basic needs. The Sharing Center was founded in 1971 as a non-profit, community based agency for charitable and philanthropic purposes. The general nature and purpose of this organization is to provide short-term emergency assistance to needy individuals and families, in the Brevard County Area where Federal, State, and County funds are not available.
Letter from the Director:
As we enter our 40th Anniversary of service to the residents of South Brevard the South Brevard Sharing Center would like to thank all those who continue to support us in this life-saving and changing endeavor.
Over the holidays we were blessed through the generosity of the community to be able to provide 530 meals for Thanksgiving, 560 meals for Christmas, and 512 sets of toys for families and children living in poverty.
We were extremely blessed primarily through the support of the churches which enabled us to provide for all three of these holiday events. Monetarily the Sharing Center could not afford to run all three programs. As a result a consortium of local churches pulled together with the assistance of Thrivent Financial Services to support the Christmas meal basket program. The food and funding raised by this group was worth over $17,000. This program drive was headed up by Ms. Pat Gorski of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Hibiscus Blvd.
The Sharing Center’s need for support continues to grow in order to enable us to meet the tremendous increase in needs of our friends and neighbors who have fallen on hard times as a result of the “great recession”. The Center now gives a five day supply of food monthly, rather than the previous tree day supply quarterly, and we still are seeing 100-200 new families each and every month. Your donations of cash, food, clothing and household items greatly assists us in our mission to help lift up our neighbors in need.
Did you know…
…in each of the months of October and November we provided over 5,000 instances of assistance to individuals (up from 1,800 just two years ago).
…with your $1 cash donation the Sharing Center can purchase what would equal $5 in food at the local grocery store.
…the Sharing Center uses a state-of-the-art online county-wide database. This is very important from a stewardship perspective, as it enables us to see assistance received by individuals over time from all the county’s largest assistance providers. This reduces greatly abuse of your well intentioned donations.
…your dollars go further as a result of our extremely frugal operations costs. Our admin is between 5-6% of all costs. Nobody in business, non-profit, or government operates as frugally to do so much with so little as the Sharing Center.
…all donated monies stay here locally in South Brevard helping our very own friends and neighbors.
The Sharing Center is very grateful to all our supporters and ask that you consider giving today. We are in the midst of what we consider the post-holiday let down. Our holiday support was indeed glorious, but donations have nearly stopped and the record breaking levels of service still continue to be serviced daily. Please give!
Respectfully,
Michael S. Hubler
Executive Director

In addition, if you sell on eBay you can choose to use the eBay Giving Works program to specify that a portion of the money you receive go to us here through that program.
Summer is traditionally a hard time for us at the South Brevard Sharing Center. Children of disadvantaged families are home from school, which rasies the demand for food and other items. At the same time, summer has traditionally been a lean time for the donations which allow us to continue to serve people in need. This year, a number of local organizations have stepped up to help us, resulting in our ability to serve record numbers of people. Without their generous support we would face an uphill battle to reach our goals.
A special thank you goes out to the following organizations and groups who have made generous donations of funds, food and time to help us continue our mission to help local families in need.
Betty Katsopoulos and all the ladies of Saint Sophia Philoptochos at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church held a food drive for us recently that resulted in the collection of over 1200 pounds of food. During a time of high demand for food from needy families, and at a lean time of year for us their hard work and generosity is greatly appreciated.
The Lockheed-Martin Employee Foundation recently made a very generous donation of funds to help us continue our mission. Their ongoing support means so much to the people who depend on our services. Thanks to all the Lockheed employees for their kindness and generosity.
Kim Register, student ministry leader at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Indian Harbour Beach recently helped us coordinate a food drive and brought a wonderful group of vacation bible school students and their parents to help shelve and organize the substantial amount of food they collected. It was a great pleasure to see so many young people take an interest in helping others. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all the men, women and children who participated.
We want to recognize the members of Suntree United Methodist Church youth ministry who volunteered their time for us helping clean and landscape our Melbourne facility. They also helped out in our pantry, bagging food orders for local families. Their efforts helped us to keep our facility clean and attractive and continue to serve our clients.

Dear friends,
This year is bringing in unprecedented levels of requests for toys for children for the holidays. We are doing our best, but the demand is simply overwhelming our ability to meet it. We need your help! Please consider giving in support of the children, or increasing your usual giving. We need toys for children of all ages from infants to teens and monetary donations for older children’s gifts and food for all.
The economy has brought record breaking levels of need to our community. Many of our families are suffering through the ravages of unemployment and underemployment. We are seeing more and more limited income grandparents coming to solicit our services with children in tow.
It is incumbent upon those of us blessed with the financial wherewithal to step up like never before to assist the neediest in our community, especially the children. If you can give please drop off your gift at either our Palm Bay or Melbourne locations, call us at (321) 727-8581, you can mail your donation to 17 E. Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne, FL 32901, or you can make a donation on-line by clicking here.
We greatly appreciate your kind consideration of our request for support for the holidays.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Hubler

There are many ways that you may help the South Brevard Sharing Center. A cash donation is very useful since it allows us flexibility to provide clients with a wide variety of services. Every dollar donated allows us to provide five dollars in food through the Second Harvest Food Bank.
A donation of items for resale in one of our thrift shops is a great way to help those who need it. Approximately 80% of the money realized from these donations goes directly to needy families in our community; the remaining 20% allows us to offset the costs of running our stores. Perhaps you have an unused vehicle that you would like to donate and qualify for a tax deduction?
You can't take it with you. Everyone has heard this old adage. However, you can help others even after you are gone. SBSC is happy to accept donations of goods and much-needed funds as bequests you can leave as part of a lasting legacy.
Do you regularly give to support SBSC? If so, you may wish to list SBSC as a beneficiary in your insurance policy. For a small amount each month you could provide big $$$ to help us continue our mission.
Volunteers are needed to help run the organization to maximize the benefits available. Food items are directly redistributed to those who are in need. Diapers and other baby items are very much appreciated by many young mothers struggling to care for their infants.
Sharing is Caring
